I used to assume that the grammar of music echoes the purported universal
Chomskyan utterance neural structures, probably with overlays or
underpinnings of kinesthesia, proprioception, etc. But Howard Gardner's
multiple intelligences model suggests that the modules involved in speech
and music are neurologically distinct; Oliver Sacks certainly had patients
who kept one while losing the other.
