The reason is simply that it is easy to agree that deformity is a bad
thing. If we had been discussing whether it is ethical to make one's
children green, things become much harder to deal with - we would all
have very different views on whether this is good or bad and that
makes boning up the essentials of the ethical problem harder. But then
again, questions like this are likelier to crop up in reality. (Maybe
we are suffering from some kind of philosopher's syndrome)

(My answer: sure, make Jr. bright green - but the green color should
be reversible, so when Jr. comes home crying when the other children
have called him a martian, mommy can give him a hormone shot and the
next day he will be orange like everybody else.)
