One book you should at least look at is by a Sociobiologist type
the title is _The_Evolution_of_Desire_ I don't remember the authours name but I just read it not too long ago, it doesn't exactly debunk too many myths, in fact in a lot of ways it explains the source of some of the behaviors via a fairly loose interpretation of sociobiological factors. He spends a lot of the book discussing how differential investment in the reproductive process leads to differences in mating strategy.
Unfortunately the sort of thinking prevalent in in the whole mars/venus memeplex has more to do with the endemic innumeracy and general scientific illiteracy of the american public. Part of it is that some people find it very difficult to cope with ambiguity, and mass media cannot help but serve the lowest common denominator first last and always.

ciao!
